Anco Orchidee

Anco Orchideeën B.V. is a Vanda orchids nursery located in Wateringen, the Netherlands. Anco is growing Vanda orchids since 1998. These orchids are being imported from Thailand. Anco is the biggest nursery in the Netherlands. On 25.000 m2 Anco is growing different Vanda breeds. Besides the main breed Vanda Blue Magic, Anco presents a wide variaty of Vanda breeds. Plants as well as flowers can be delivered in different colours, whatever the costumer desires.

Philisophy

The story goes back 30 years to Thailand, to a man completely fascinated with the Vanda Orchid. He collected the botanical Vandas and began making new hybrids with them. To create new plants you first cross 2 beautiful parent plants, a year after which you receive seed.It then takes 6 years before the plants bloom for the first time. You select the best children after 2 years. As this generation is not perfect, you have to cross the best children from different families. Crossing them with each other again takes 6-7 years, so 15 years later the Vanda-grandmothers giv their first, almost perfect, Vanda-grandchildren.

years ago, Anco went to Thailand to look for Orchid plants. The owner of Anco was in love with Orchids, and wanted to make it his profession.

At the time, Anco was a rose cultivator. In Thailand I found men with almost perfect Vanda orchids. I fell in love with these plants from the very start. At the time, nobody in Europe believed in Vandas. I, as owner of Anco, saw the beauty of this amazing Orchid and started the Vanda project. It was not easy, and it took years and years of experience to find the best way of growing Vandas.We put a lot of energy into selecting the best ones for growing in Europe (in Thailand it is always hot and sunny, and I think you know what kind of weather we have in the Netherlands).

With some varieties we were lucky, like the popular Vanda Blue Magic. Other colours were not even close to perfection, but we remained confident. We just kept doing the crossing over and over again. We are only satisfied if the Vanda has a perfect bright colour, large flowers and beautiful stripes or spots, and also easily grows new branches (especially at the homes of our clients). Every now and then we found perfect ones like Vanda Black Magic.

To get new colours we buy many seedlings (children from almost perfect fathers and mother plants). We test these plants for 2 years, and then select only the best of the best from thousands. When we are completely satisfied, we send this beauty back to Thailand to make a clone out of it (from 1 plant we can make 10000 if we are lucky). We then have to wait for at least 6 years before we get flowering size plants back from Thailand.

It takes another year of growing in perfect glasshouses in Holland before we can sell this perfect product. Some varieties are still so rare that we can only sell them as cut flowers. We only have a few plants, and people can use them for weddings or special occasions. We now get at least one new variety every year. Next year we will start selling some limited editions of very special plants in exclusive vases.
